The triple bottom line

We don't pretend for a second that we are perfect, but from day one we have always strived for the triple bottom line – Environmental, Social and Financial sustainability.


Given that our core business is growing, sourcing and supplying organic herbs, spices and botanicals we have a real head-start. Scientific evidence has proven that organic agriculture results in much greater biodiversity (more birds, bees and animals) and protects the environment through legally binding standards that prevent pollution and ban herbicides and artificial fertilisers. Organic farming is also playing an increasingly important role in mitigating climate change – by taking carbon out of the atmosphere and safely locking it away in the soil. In addition, there are a number of projects we have been working on over the last few years to further reduce our environmental footprint. These include:

  • Installing a 20Kw solar array on the warehouse roof
  • Composting our milling waste and using this in our herb field
  • Buying larger volumes from our primary and secondary suppliers - which is far more energy efficient
  • Drawing our water from a bore-hole that we have sunk on the farm


In addition to Organic Herb Trading’s Ethical Sourcing Policy we are fully committed to investing in our staff and ensuring a happy and supportive workplace. This includes a genuine family atmosphere, a strong commitment to positive health and annual profit share scheme. We are very proud to have been awarded Fair for Life certification in 2016.

From a much broader perspective, there is now compelling scientific evidence that organic food – as part of a balanced diet - is better for people’s health. Put simply organic food is the best way to:

  • Avoid potentially harmful pesticides and residues
  • Ensure the greatest level of nutrients and antioxidants in the food and drink we consume
  • Avoid hydrogenated fats and controversial additives such as aspartame, tartrazine and MSG

Our staff shared lunches always feature a good helping of organic food and are at their best when they include salads harvested straight from our biodynamic herb field.

Clearly for any business to be sustainable in the long term it has to make a profit. And whilst our profits are unlikely to attract the attention of venture capitalists any time soon, we make a surplus that allows for meaningful re-investment.
